On Wednesday 1/23, East wrestling hosted another Chesmont league dual, this time against the Coatesville Red Raiders! Both teams were pretty banged up, but league contests bring out some of the best efforts! After the final buzzer, the Cougars won 54-18. Zach Aceto (220), Lukas Richie (132), Kyle Mittelstadt (138), Jett Lucas-Muprhy (145), Will Vincent (152), Spencer Uggla (170), and Billy Dyer (182) all registered falls, while Alex Hillestad (106) and Ray Wileczek (195) picked up forfiets! It was a great victory, and it partnered with a wonderful celebration of East’s 5 seniors, the managers, and all of their devoted parents. Congratulations and many thanks go out to Lukas Richie, Jett-Lucas Murphy, Zach Sharaf, Jack Scheerer, Will Vincent, Audrey Romanelli, and Kaleena Czajkowski for their outstanding contributions to the East wrestling program! We all look forward to watching you continue to succeed at the next level. Good luck to all and many thanks to moms and dads!!!
Month: January 2019
East continues to battle at the Denver Duals!
Over the wintry weekend of 1/19, the Cougars travelled west to Lancaster County and the town of Denver. Cocalico HS hosted it’s annual Denver Duals and East sent the able bodies that remain. The Cougars battled with what they had and managed to finish with a 1-2 record in the three dual event. They lost to Garden Spot 48-35 and Cocalico 44-35, but managed to snag a win against Lancaster Catholic 48-25. Keanu Manuel (106), Lukas Richie (132), Jett Lucas-Murphy (138), and Zach Sharaf (285) all went undefeated on the day, while Billy Dyer (170) and Zach Aceto (220) finished with 2-1 records. Next week holds more Chesmont league action so the Cougars must bounce back quickly. The remainder of this season’s dual meet competition awaits!
Henderson outlasts the Cougars!
On Wednesday 1/16, East hosted West Chester Henderson for a league dual and their home opener. The night had a touch of nostalgia as Coach Horvath was honored for his 300thwin as head coach and the local wrestling community gathered to reminisce about the ol’ days. However, all good times must come to an end, and when the wrestling concluded, the Warriors handed East a tough 45-21 loss as the league mentality brought out some furious performances. Keanu Manuel (106) and Zach Sharaf (285) collected the only pins for the Cougars, while Spencer Uggla (182), Lukas Richie (132), and Jett Lucas-Murphy (138) earned decisions. During the JV competition, Alejandro Santiago (138) and Jackson Swearhart (195) looked great for East picking up victories and splitting the dual with the JV Warriors. In the end, the Cougars did not have the overall depth to keep up with Henderson, but they look forward to more league challenges in the near future. Good luck gentlemen!
The Big Red Duals leave the Cougars bruised up!
On Saturday 1/12, D-East returned to Souderton HS to compete at their annual Big Red Duals. Injuries have really taken a toll on the Cougars, and this event made sure they remember! East finished with a 1-3 record defeating Tunkhannock 60-12, but falling to North Penn 45-29, Souderton 47-33, and Pennsbury 49-26. The competition was tough, and the Cougars did what they could as all available hands were on deck. Keanu Manuel (106) and Kyle Mittelstadt (132) went undefeated on the day, while Lukas Richie (138), Will Vincent (145), Spencer Uggla (170), Zach Aceto (220), and Zach Sharaf (285) all finished 3-1. Congrats also go out to Billy Dyer (182) who captured his first two Varsity wins during the tournament! Again, the Cougars showed more effort than the scores reflect, but only overall team health will help fix that. Good luck to the team and coaches as next week brings their home opener and another date at the Denver Duals where they will compete with their little brothers, Lionville Middle School!
The Cougars’ first 2019 league dual ends in defeat!
This past Wednesday, Chesmont league action opened up around Chester County. With many injuries and illnesses, Downingtown East hobbled down to Avon Grove HS to take on their first league opponent. The dual was brief, with few JV wrestlers, a number of forfeits, and a handful of pins. In the end, Avon Grove defeated East 36-35 and the Cougars left with heavy hearts. Keanu Manuel (106), Will Vincent (160), Spencer Uggla (170), and Zach Sharaf (285) recorded falls, while Zach Aceto (220), Kyle Mittelstadt (132), and Jett Lucas-Murphy (138) earned decisions. High honors go to senior captain Lukas Richie (138) who weighed a mere 135 lbs. and pushed up to the 147 lb. class to take on Avon Grove’s returning state qualifier and lost a razor thin 6-5 decision at the buzzer. He took the team on his shoulders to try and win the dual and should be praised for it. More dual action lies ahead in the coming weeks and hopefully the Cougars can get healthy, gather their wits, and focus on the future.
Downingtown East is able to bounce back at The Rage!
On Saturday 1/4/19, the Cougar wrestlers travelled back down 202 South to compete at Garnet Valley HS and their “Rage in the Cage.” The 8-team event showcased some hotly contested duals, and East found themselves in the thick of it. After a disappointing 38-35 loss to Interboro, the Cougars bounced back and collected wins against Central Bucks East 45-31, and Chesmont rivals West Chester Rustin 36-35. Wrestlers going an undefeated 3-0 on the day were Keanu Manuel (106), Lukas Richie (138), Spencer Uggla (170), Jack Scheerer (182), Zach Aceto (220), and Zach Sharaf (285). East finished the day in 5th place and with a clear message of the work that needs to be done as 2019 rolls on. Chesmont League action opens up this coming Wednesday, so the time to grind is now!
