Over the weekend, Upper Dublin High School hosted the final 8 teams in the annual District 1 Dual championships to determine qualifying teams for the PIAA State Duals. The house was packed and tensions were high! Friday night, the Cougars fell to 3rd seed Springford 43-18, but bounced back to defeat Council Rock North 45-21. The next and final day of this heated competition, East put forth a strong effort but eventually fell to Pennridge 36-28. Despite the results, the final standings show Downingtown East as one of the top 6 teams in the region and true contenders in that company. As the event concluded, James Strommer (113), Wade Cummings (126), and Austin Lillis (145) emerged 3-0, while Nik Zimmerman (120), Jude McDowell (138), James Meyer (160), and Billy McGinley (220) finished 2-1. Down in Delaware County, the Cougar JV squad competed at Penncrest’s annual “King of the Jungle” tournament. East finished with Jarrett Hansen (113) and Phips Jules (182) as champions while Connor Birzes (120) and Josh Wileczek (195) picked up silver medals. Congratulations go out to all of the Cougar wrestlers for delivering one action-packed weekend and making the most out of their hard work. D-East delivers in the Battle of the Brandywine!
On Wednesday evening 1/28, the annual battle between East and West wrestling teams arose from the ashes once again! The dual for Brandywine supremacy saw Downingtown East execute a remarkable performance, collecting 13 wins out of 14 matches and delivering a 57 -3 score line. James Strommer (113), Nik Zimmerman (120), Wade Cummings (126), Austin Lillis (145), and Carter Regitz (195) registered falls for the Cougars, while Jude McDowell (138), James Meyer (160), and Billy McGinley (220) secured major decisions. The East side JV squad opened the route with 5 out of 5 victories; Jarrett Hansen (113), Jack Lawton (126), Brendan McGinley (220), and Phips Jules (195) finished with pins. Congratulations Downingtown East! Now, time to move on as District 1 Dual action jumps back on Friday night at Upper Dublin HS. Good luck Cougars!

Downingtown East Wrestling achieved full recovery this weekend after a tough mid-week. The Cougars claimed five efficient wins on their way to a 3rd consecutive championship at Neshaminy’s “Redskin Duals.” They defeated Bensalem 60-6, Twin Valley 70-3, Martin L. King 80-0, Archbishop Carrol 70-10, and Archbishop Ryan 80-0. Brett Horne (106), James Strommer (113), Wade Cummings (126), Austin Lillis (145), Dalton Burt (152), James Meyer (160), Alec Horne (170), Brent Czajkowski (182), and Billy McGinley (220) all went a perfect 5-0 on the day. In the JV competition, Shea Milligan (126), Connor Birzes (120), and Josh Wileczek (195) all collected championships. Congratulations to the Cougars for displaying an impressive rebound and using the opportunity to sharpen their skills for a big week ahead! East journeys west to tackle the Hecker duals!
This past Saturday 1/17 saw the East-side Cougars pack the bus and travel to Garden Spot HS for their annual “Tom Hecker Duals.” The event commemorates the passing of a beloved Garden Spot coach and draws ten formidable teams from District 1 and 3. After the competition ended, the Cougars finished the day 4-1, again finding themselves against perennial power Central Dauphin in the final. They dropped the final 37-27, winning half of the contested bouts, but were unable to secure the bonus points needed to notch a win. On their way into the final, East collected victories against Dallastown 44-15, Upper Darby 49-15, LaSalle 54-12, and North Penn 58-18. Nik Zimmerman (120), Wade Cummings (126), James Meyer (160), Alec Horne (170), and Owen Morris (HWT) all went 5-0 on the day, while Bret Horne (106), James Strommer (113), Austin Lillis (145) and Billy McGinley (220) finished with 4-1 marks. At the JV competition, Jarrett Hansen (113), Phips Jules (182), and Josh Wileczek (195) all went undefeated with 3-0 finishes. Nice job to all DE wrestlers, and best of luck as more league action and a date with the District 1 Dual tournament approaches! Time to crank it up another notch!
The Cougars take out the Vikings in home opener!
On Wednesday evening 1/14, the Cougar wrestlers opened up their den for another league dual against visiting West Chester East. With the home crowd in full support, D-East executed a strong team performance and defeated the Vikings 63-3, winning 13 of 14 bouts. Wade Cummings (126), Jude McDowell (138), and Jason Gibson (182) recorded falls while Austin Lillis (145) and James Strommer (113) secured technical falls. Also contributing were major decisions by James Meyer (160) and Alec Horne (170). Brent Czajkowski (195) revisited his Viking opponent from two weeks ago and collected the “revenge” win in a sound 5-1 victory. The Cougar JV contingent also impressed with wins from Jack Clay (152), Josh Wileczek (195), Carter Regitz (195), Jarrett Hansen (113), Shea Milligan (126), Wayne Salt (145), Luke Moran (145), and Brendan McGinley (220).
