The Myrmidons take to the Summer mats at Boyertown!

This past week, 20 of our Myrmidon wrestlers made the daily journey up to Boyertown to compete at their annual “Grizzly Duals.” From Monday to Wednesday, the team wrestled two to 3 matches a night and faced opponents such as Boyertown, O.J. Roberts, Springford, Methacton, Pottstown, and other local adversaries. The event draws Summer wrestlers looking to skip the weigh-ins and team scores and just WRESTLE! Wade Cummings wrestled to a 6-0 record, while Nik Zimmerman, Brett Horne, Brent Czajkowski, and Owen Morris collected 5-1 finishes. Congrats also go out to first time team members Lukas Richie (9th), Jett Lucas-Murphy (9th), and Zach Aceto (8th) for battling with their future teammates! Once again, the “Grizzly Duals” gave our grapplers the opportunity to measure their current level and identify what needs to be developed for the Winter season. Full-steam ahead….next up, Bucknell University’s team camp in July. Good luck gentlemen!

D-East digs deep and pushes 3 to the Big Dance!

The District 1 Regional tournament plays host to wrestlers from 63 of the represented schools in the four-county area, Chester, Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery. Some consider it a “meat grinder,” where the best of SEPA come to fulfill their destiny, or meet their fate. Downingtown East wrestling attended with 10 charged hearts, but only 3 remain. The team finished in 6th place with 51pts, and placed 3 athletes in the top five of their respective weight classes to qualify for the PIAA State tournament this coming week at Hershey. Wade Cummings won the 126 lb. class with a 3-2 victory over highly-ranked Zach Trampe from CR South. Their match was held till last as the premier event of the night. James Meyer took 2nd at 152 falling in the 2nd tie-breaker with a score of 2-1 to another CR South foe, Dylan Schwartz. Lastly, Billy McGinley took 4th place at 220 losing to Pennridge’s Ezra Outlaw 3-1. Congratulations must also go out to the other regional qualifiers who put forth hard efforts, but came up short: Nik Zimmerman (120, 0-2), Jude McDowell (132, 0-2), Austin Lillis (138, 0-2), Alec Horne (170, 0-2), Jason Gibson (182, 2-2), Brent Czajkowski (195, 0-2), and James Strommer (113, injury withdrawal). The weekend definitely drew some tears, but also shed light on future possibilities for the DE wrestling program, especially for those who have gotten a taste of the regional. Good luck to the state qualifiers as they brave the toughest high school championship in the nation! Bring home some hardware gentlemen!!!

D-East opens and shuts the cage down in Concord Township!

This Saturday 1/10, Downingtown East Wrestling travelled down 202 South to compete at Garnet Valley HS’s “Rage in the Cage!” The eight-team bracketed dual meet tournament saw the Cougars dominate as they defeated Interboro 63-18, Garnet Valley 62-9, and West Chester Rustin 44-17 to win the championship. Bret Horne (106), James Strommer (113), Nik Zimmerman (120), Wade Cummings (126), Austin Lillis (145), James Meyer (160), Alec Horne (170), Jason Gibson (182), and Billy McGinley (220) went undefeated on the day. Brent Czajkowski (195) and Jude McDowell (138) finished 2-1. D-East put on a solid performance and capitalized on multiple bonus-point scenarios throughout the day. Well done Cougars! Now it’s time to move forward and concentrate on more league competition coming this week as well as next weekend’s grueling Tom Hecker duals!
